Chairman of PSSI Erick Thohir Coordinates with Minister of Law to Ensure Copyright Respect

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir reiterated the federation's commitment to always support the government's policies regarding copyright protection and the use of songs, especially in national team matches. This was conveyed after coordination with Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas.

“In a country, there are rules. When discussing with the Minister of Law, I reiterated that PSSI fully supports the government's policy. He also said that national songs are obviously already in the public domain, so there is no need to debate anymore,” Erick said in Jakarta, Monday (18/8/2025).

Erick stressed that this coordination was important for national football to run in line with regulation, while still respecting the musicians' work. PSSI, according to him, does not turn a blind eye to the use of commercial songs in support of the national team or football activities.

“For example, when PSSI collaborated with God Bless to perform the song Rumah Kita. It was all done with a clear process, we directly involved the owner of the work. Because I believe, the creators of the songs should get the appreciation they deserve,” Erick said.

As a real form of appreciation, Erick revealed PSSI's plan to meet the family of the late of Mrs Sud, the creator of the song Tanah Airku, which is often sung by supporters and national players.

“God willing, in the next few moments we together with the Minister of Law will meet Mrs Sud's family. We want to pay tribute to his enduring work, while reminding us that the heroes of songwriters have also made great contributions that should not be forgotten,” Erick said.

According to Erick, the use of national anthems as well as struggle songs in stadiums not only presents euphoria, but also reinforces a sense of unity. However, if it involves a commercial song, PSSI will still respect copyright and applicable procedures.

“When players sing My Country on the pitch, the euphoria is unbelievable. Some even shed tears. Songs like this are not just entertainment, but become a unifier of the nation. Therefore, the mechanism of its use must be implemented correctly and proportionally,” Erick said.
