Getting Ready For The Flu Season

hate the stomach flu.  (not that anyone loves it). But whether we hate it or not It is flu season and they say this is a bad year. I remember as a kid getting the flu you went to bed vomited several times, had diarrhea and felt awful for a few days.

Things have changed since then. There are many strains and you can still get some kind even though you had your flu shot.

Everyone has their own remedies. Growing up it was toast, chicken noodle soup, and some sprite, but it is very important to take your child to the pediatrician or a GP if he or she has fever and…

  • is unable to drink fluids, or won’t drink them
  • is sleepy and pale
  • vomits frequently
  • has difficulty breathing
  • has a severe headache

I have learned through the years of kids vomit everywhere but the toilet. If you suspect they are coming down with the flu keep a Sick Bucket by their bed so they can vomit in it. (make sure you have extra bags)

Another Great Tip…Keep dollar store table cloths or shower lines for these times. Drape one over your child’s sheets of over the couch before they lay down. That way if they get sick you can just roll the tablecloth up and toss it in the trash and put another one down.

Quarantine sick family members within one room to avoid spreading germs.

Clorox Wipes Will Be Your Best Friend….Did you know that the surface you are wanting to disinfect needs to stay wet for 4 minutes with Clorox wipes?

Read labels on things you think are killing germs.

  • Doorknobs
  • Light Switches
  • Faucet Handles
  • Toilet Handles
  • Cell Phones
  • Keyboards
  • iPads
  • Remote Controls

Colds, the flu, and sinus infections have such similar symptoms that it can be tough to know what truly ails you. Take a look at the chart below and learn what to do from WebMD.

Let us share some ideas we have seen that just might help you family through the flu….

Some kids will not take heir medicine? Dip a lollipop in it again and again until the medicine is gone. Once it’s gone, let them finish the lollipop.

Try this Simple, Handmade Hand Sanitizer from Live Simply. Have your family use this often.

Popsicles can soothe a sore throat, too. These Homemade Creamsicles From One Crazy House are packed with orange juice, so you get a good dose of vitamin C!

Another help for Sore Throats….

I am sure your kids would love to cure their sore throat by eating marshmallows.

Rub vapor rub (home made version that is safe for kids can be found HERE) on bottom of the soles of their feet and cover with socks. This Works.
