A Boy and His Masks

Let me tell you a story of Alex Rodiguez Rios  (Goes By “Alex”)

“My family arrived to the state of Durango when I was about 3 years old.  My mother and father had separated and my brothers and me stayed with our grandparents. We were a very humble but honest family. Our grandparents taught us good principles.

At the age of 8 I began to work to help the family. Copala was a Mining Town and it had many tourists. I began to search the mines for rocks. those rocks contained lead and they shined beautifully. I would sell those rocks to the Americans that would visit our town.

At age 11 I began to make wood figurines from a tree we call Pochote. That tree produces large thorns and with those thorns I would make the figurines.

I never imagined that someday a man named Luiz Perez would come to Copala. I met him at age 13. He was very creative. He had seen elsewhere something similar to our masks. He modified them and made the better, having just arrived from Mexico City.

Since Copala was a tourist town, he began to make the masks out of leather. He later invited me to work with him. At the beginning he only worked with natural tanned leather. He later told me that I would inherit his business and his art. I then began to also make masks of leather and gradually I have introduced different designs and colors that are very unique.

I thank God that it has gone very well. My friend, Luiz Perez, no longer works with leather and I have the Galleria in Copola.

Each of Alex’s Masks are a True Work Of Art. The Leather is Hand Stained and Painted in Great Detail With Stains and Pain in Many Colors.

The Leather is Shaped, Folded, Curved and Some Are Decorated With Sea Shells, Snake Skin, and Other Items.
